چکیده

Explaining and predicting the popularity of online multimedia content is an important problem for the practice of information dissemination and consumption. Recent work advances our understanding of popularity, but one important gap remains: to precisely quantify the relationship between the popularity of an online item and the external promotions it receives. This work supplies the missing link between exogenous inputs from public social media platforms (Twitter) and endogenous responses within video content platforms (Youtube), by studying a 6-months feed of 1.06 billion tweets about 81.9 million YouTube videos. This is done via a novel mathematical model, the Hawkes intensity process, which is able to explain the complex popularity history of each video according to its content, network, and sensitivity to promotion. This model supplies a prototypical description of videos, called an endo-exo map, which allows us to explain popularity as the joint effect of two intrinsic measures and the amount of discussion from the outside world. This model also allows us to forecast the effects of future promotions more accurately than approaches based on popularity history alone, and to identify videos that have a high potential to become viral, or those for which promotions will have hardly any effect.

A Tutorial on Hawkes Processes for Events in Social Media

This chapter provides an accessible introduction for point processes, and especially Hawkes processes, for modeling discrete, inter-dependent events over continuous time. We start by reviewing the definitions and the key concepts in point processes. We then introduce the Hawkes process, its event intensity function, as well as schemes for event simulation and parameter estimation. We also descr...

Viral Potential and the Economics of Attention for Modeling Online Popularity under Promotion

Modeling the popularity dynamics of an online item is an important open problem in computational social science. This paper presents an in-depth study of popularity dynamics under external promotions, especially in predicting popularity jumps of online videos, and determining effective and efficient schedules to promote online content. The recently proposed Hawkes Intensity Process (HIP) models...

Isotonic Hawkes Processes

Hawkes processes are powerful tools for modeling the mutual-excitation phenomena commonly observed in event data from a variety of domains, such as social networks, quantitative finance and healthcare records. The intensity function of a Hawkes process is typically assumed to be linear in the sum of triggering kernels, rendering it inadequate to capture nonlinear effects present in real-world d...

Large deviations and applications for Markovian Hawkes processes with a large initial intensity

Hawkes process is a class of simple point processes that is self-exciting and has clustering effect. The intensity of this point process depends on its entire past history. It has wide applications in finance, insurance, neuroscience, social networks, criminology, seismology, and many other fields. In this paper, we study linear Hawkes process with an exponential kernel in the asymptotic regime...

Modeling and Predicting Popularity Dynamics of Microblogs using Self-Excited Hawkes Processes

The ability to model and predict the popularity dynamics of individual user generated items on online media has important implications in a wide range of areas. In this paper, we propose a probabilistic model using a Self-Excited Hawkes Process (SEHP) to characterize the process through which individual microblogs gain their popularity. This model explicitly captures the triggering effect of ea...
